Reorganizing Your Self-Storage Unit: How To Restore Order To A Messy Space

Jon Sanchez

Having a self-storage unit can be a great way to keep clutter out of your home. Over time, your storage unit may also become a source of clutter and chaos. It can be difficult to find items when you need them or to even remember what you have stored inside. If it's been a while since you went through the items in your self-storage unit, here are some ways you can restore order to your space.

Wardrobe Boxes

Pull seasonal clothing out of traditional boxes and storage bins and organize items inside of wardrobe boxes. These boxes are taller in size and feature integrated dowel rods for hanging clothing and linens. You can use them to keep suits, dresses, and other apparel neatly organized and free from wrinkles. Line up several boxes and begin to sort clothing by style or family member, and be sure to clearly label each box. You can place groups of clothing inside garment bags before hanging to provide an extra layer of protection against dirt and dust.

Sports Storage Racks

If you use your storage unit to keep sporting equipment stashed away in the offseason, consider using sports storage racks instead of boxes. These racks offer convenient compartments for balls, gloves, bats, and other items. You'll be able to quickly find the items you need when it's time for the season to start, and your items won't get lost in a pile of boxes. You can also find special racks for fishing rods and other outdoor equipment for even more organization options.

Lattice Walls

You can use traditional garden lattices to create a sorting area along your walls. Simply place pieces of lattice against a wall in your storage unit and use S-shaped hooks to hang items along the wall. You can use this idea to organize everything from handbags to holiday decorations. By placing the items on the wall instead of in boxes, you can maximize the amount of storage space you have in the unit. For this idea, you'll want to wrap the items in plastic or cloth bags to keep dirt and dust away. Lattice walls with hooks are also an ideal choice for sorting tools if you're short on space in your garage.

Empty Storage Bins

Keeping empty storage bins may seem a little odd at first, but these bins can be a great asset in your storage unit. You can use them to gather items you want to take home, and you can also use them as disposal containers for any items you decide to throw away. Keeping a few extra bins can also come in handy if you decide to add more items to the unit, as you can use them to sort and organize everything.
