The following are six mistakes to avoid when it comes to cleaning army rank insignia metal pins. 

Procrastinating about cleaning pins

The biggest mistake to avoid is not cleaning your pins often enough and waiting too long between cleanings.

The longer you wait, the more residue there will be on your pins and the more difficult it will be to get this residue off. Clean your insignia pins right away when they need it to keep them in the best possible condition. 

Using polish on a soft enamel pin

Make sure you know whether you have soft enamel pins in your collection. If you do, it's essential that you don't clean these pins using any type of polish. Polish can make the paint come off of soft enamel pins. For this type of pin, you should simply rub the pin with a gentle cloth to clean it. 

Cleaning with vinegar or citrus solutions

You should never use any vinegar, citrus solution, or other acidic substance to clean an army rank insignia metal pin. These types of substances can cause damage to the metal and enamel on your insignia pins. 

Failing to use a gentle fabric for cleanings

You can damage your pins if you are using a rough fabric when you are cleaning them. Make sure that the cloth you use for cleanings is not abrasive in any way. Use a gentle cloth that is soft to the touch when you are cleaning your metal insignia pins. 

Trying to polish pins using a polishing machine

If you have a polishing machine, you might think that using this machine is the best way to clean your metal insignia pins. However, this is not the case.

Metal insignia pins should be cleaned by hand. Using a polishing machine on them is too harsh. Insignia pins are fragile and can't stand up to the rigors of machine cleanings very well. 

Using a household cleaner rather than a polish that is specifically formulated for jewelry cleanings

You can't just use any type of household cleaner to clean your insignia pins. You need to use a polish that is specially formulated to be used on metal pins and jewelry. Carefully examine the contents and listed usage instructions for any cleaner before you use it to make sure that it is appropriate.
